The kind of sports we play today may not be explicitely mentioned in the bible however a close look at Gods words would reveal his instructions for us in every situation we find ourselves in. Read and be encouraged.
Here are five different encouraging verses for sports from the King James Version (KJV), New English Version (NEV), Good News Bible (GNB), and the Book of Mormon:
King James Version (KJV):
- 1 Corinthians 9:25 – “And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.”
- 1 Timothy 6:12 – “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
- Ephesians 6:13 – “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour’
- of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
- Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
- James 1:12 – “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
New English Version (NEV):
- 1 Corinthians 9:25 – “Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable.”
- 1 Timothy 6:12 – “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
- Ephesians 6:13 – “Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.”
- Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
- James 1:12 – “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
Understanding the first verse here lets us know that in as much as we strive to be the best in sports or anything else we must understand that God comes first. Put him first in your ppursuit in sports and he will come through for you with all you require to achieve your goals.
Good News Bible (GNB):
- 1 Corinthians 9:25 – “Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline, in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last; but we do it for one that will last forever.”
- 1 Timothy 6:12 – “Run your best in the race of faith, and win eternal life for yourself; for it was to this life that God called you when you firmly professed your faith before many witnesses.”
- Ephesians 6:13 – “So put on God’s armor now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy’s attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.”
- Proverbs 16:3 – “Ask the Lord to bless your plans, and you will be successful in carrying them out.”
- James 1:12 – “Happy are those who remain faithful under trials, because when they succeed in passing such a test, they will receive as their reward the life which God has promised to those who love him.”
For the third verse from ephesians, When you have put God First, you are already wearing his armour, hence no attacks, bullying or challenges can stop your advancement. With God you will overcome the challenges you have to face in your carreer.
Book of Mormon:
- Alma 26:12 – “Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things.”
- Helaman 5:12 – “And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation.”
- Mosiah 2:22 – “And behold, all that he requires of you is to keep his commandments; and he has promised you that if ye would keep his commandments ye should prosper in the land.”
- 3 Nephi 15:9 – “Behold, I am the law and the light. Look unto me, and endure to the end, and ye shall live.”
- Ether 12:6 – “I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.”
For the last two verses from proverbs and the book of james, Do not hesitate to seek the face of God and ask for his help and directions. Let him help you and give you allthe encouragement you need. And as seen in the bookof james, if you heed his words, put him first in your carreer, and have faith along with hard work and dedication, his word promises you victory.
